Thiazolidinedione

A drug that decreases insulin resistance, increases muscle glucose use, decreases gluconeogenesis, increases PPARγ in adipose tissue, and leads to an increase in fatty acid uptake by the adipose tissue.

A class of oral hypoglycemic agents that lowers blood sugars by reducing insulin resistance (improving tissue sensitivity to the effects of insulin) in fat and muscle, as well as the liver. A commonly used agent in this class is pioglitazone.

Also known as glitazones, thiazolidinediones are a class of oral hypoglycemic medications employed for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. These drugs function by diminishing the body cells’ resistance to insulin and are frequently utilized alongside other oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin or a sulfonylurea drug. The primary thiazolidinediones are pioglitazone and rosiglitazone.
