Thyrotropin-releasing hormone

Also known as protirelin or thyrotropin releasing factor (TRF). TRH is a byproduct of the hypothalamus, which stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release TSH (thyroid- stimulating hormone). TRH production in the hypothalamus is stimulated when blood levels of the thyroid hormone thyroxine are low.

A hormonelike substance from the hypothalamus (in the brain) that acts on the anterior pituitary gland to stimulate the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone. TRH is given by intravenous injection to test thyroid gland function and to estimate reserves of thyroid-stimulating hormone in the pituitary.

A hormone secreted by the hypothalamus that stimulates the anterior pituitary to release thyrotropin.
