Thyroxine

One of the two hormones that are secreted by the thyroid gland. It has to be converted in the body to triiodothyronine before it is active. Thyroxine is available in pill form as levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroxine, for the treatment of hypothyroidism.

A hormone produced by the thyroid gland that is necessary for proper metabolism.

A hormone produced by the thyroid gland which regulates the body’s metabolism and the conversion of food into heat, used in treatment of hypothyroidism.

One of the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland responsible for metabolic rate and processing of all types of food and protein synthesis in bodily tissues.

A thyroid hormone measured in venous blood; elevated in hyperthyroidism and decreased in hypothyroidism.

The principal metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid glands; also known as T4. Thyroxine is produced in the thyroid gland by a synthesis of iodine with the amino acid tyrosine. The thyroid gland requires dietary iodine to produce thyroxine.

One of the hormones synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland. Thyroxine can be administered by mouth to treat underactivity of the thyroid gland.

A crystalline substance, containing iodine, isolated from the thyroid gland and possessing the properties of thyroid extract. It has also been synthesised. It is used in patients with defective function of the thyroid, such as myxoedema.

One of the principal hormones secreted by the thyroid gland that increases the use of all food types for energy production and increases the rate of protein synthesis in most tissues. It is used to treat hypothyroidism. Chemically, it is 3,5,3′,5′-tetraiodothyronine.

Hormone produced by the thyroid gland to regulate metabolism and hence can control weight.

Medicinal solution or liquid remedy in which herbs and plant extracts are preserved in alcohol.

A thyroid gland hormone that regulates cellular metabolic rates.

The thyroid hormone that governs numerous vital physiological processes within the body.

Signified by the symbol T4, levothyroxine is the most crucial thyroid hormone. It is administered orally to treat hypothyroidism, a condition involving an underactive thyroid gland.

The primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It can now be synthetically created and is used to treat an underactive thyroid gland.
