Total lung capacity (TLC)

The greatest amount of air that the lungs can contain.

Total amount of gas that the lungs can hold.

Volume of air that the lungs can hold, defined as the vital capacity combined with the residual volume; average value = 6,000 cc.

The volume of air in the lungs after a maximal inspiration. This amount is important in evaluating the ability of the lung to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The amount of air remaining in the lungs after a deep breath, referred to as the end-tidal volume. In adults, the typical range for this value is between 4 and 6 quarts.

A test conducted to quantify the quantity of air present in the lungs following a maximal inhalation by an individual.
