Tracheostomy

A small opening, called a stoma, that is made by a tracheotomy, a surgical procedure through the neck and into the trachea, or windpipe. A tracheostomy usually involves the placement of a plastic tube into this opening to provide an airway and permit the removal of secretions from the lungs. The tube allows air to be pumped directly into the lungs and may be equipped with an inflatable cuff that makes speech possible by allowing air to pass over the vocal cords.

A surgical operation in which a hole is made into the trachea through the neck to relieve obstruction to breathing, as in diphtheria. A curved metal, plastic, or rubber tube is usually inserted through the hole and held in position by tapes tied around the neck. It may be possible for the patient to speak by occluding the opening with his fingers. The tube must be kept clean and unblocked. It often helps breathing if secretions are sucked out of the bronchial tree.

Also known as tracheotomy. The operation in which the trachea or windpipe is opened from the front of the neck, so that air may be directly drawn or passed into the lower air passages. The opening is made through the second and third rings of the trachea.

The surgical opening of the trachea to provide and secure an open airway. This procedure may be performed in emergency situations (e.g., when there is an acute upper airway obstruction) or electively to replace a temporary airway provided by an endotracheal tube that has been in place or is anticipated to remain in place for more than 10 to 12 days.

An aperture within the neck leading into the windpipe, enabling the insertion of a conduit to uphold an efficient passageway for air and provide assistance to an individual in respiration.

A surgical procedure involving the creation of an opening in the trachea (windpipe) and the insertion of a tube to ensure a functional air passage is known as tracheostomy. This procedure is employed as an emergency treatment for various airway issues related to the larynx (voicebox).

Scheduled tracheostomy procedures are primarily conducted on individuals who have lost the capacity to breathe spontaneously and are undergoing prolonged ventilation or those who struggle to prevent saliva and other fluids from entering the trachea. In cases of laryngectomy (surgical removal of the larynx), a permanent tracheostomy is essential.

The surgical procedure to create an opening in the windpipe via the neck.
