Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Refers to the use of a magnetic field to stimulate or inhibit cortical neurons in treatment resistant depression. TMS is not intended to produce a seizure, so anesthesia is not required.

The application of pulses from a magnetic coil to induce electrical currents in specific parts of the brain. This treatment has been used in experimental neuroscience to study the activity of different areas of the brain, and in psychiatry as a noninvasive alternative to electroconvulsive therapy.

In this type of electromagnetic therapy, an insulated coil is placed against the head, and an electrical current generates a magnetic field into the brain.
