An event which forces another event to happen. Examples: a trigger could be written in legislation so that if health care costs increased beyond a specified rate of growth in a year, price controls would “automatically” be invoked; a billing system could have the sales tax “automatically” computed at a rate triggered by the state or city in which the purchaser is located.
