Located in or coming from areas around the equator where the climate is generally very hot and humid.
Lying anywhere between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer, in what was once known as the ‘torrid zone’—defined as the part of the globe in which the sun is directly overhead at least once each year. Plants do not observe these strict divisions and many tropical plant groups spill over into the subtropics. Also many plants coming from mountain areas of the tropics are moderately frost-tolerant, whereas lowland tropical plants are nearly always frost tender.
