Tuberculin test

A test to see if someone has tuberculosis, in which someone is exposed to tuberculin and the reaction of the skin is noted.

Test to determine past or present infection or exposure to tuberculosis, based on a skin reaction to injection, scratching, or puncturing of the skin with tuberculin, a purified protein derivative of the tuberculosis bacterium. Types of tuberculin tests include the Mantoux test and the tine test.

A skin test using tuberculin to detect susceptibility or exposure to tuberculosis.

Skin tests designed to check for exposure to the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis are known as tuberculin tests. These are conducted for tuberculosis diagnosis and prior to BCG vaccination. A small quantity of tuberculin, a purified protein derived from the bacteria, is injected into the skin. A skin response, if present, is observed a few days later. Such a reaction suggests that the person has been previously exposed to the bacteria, either through infection or vaccination.
