Tubocurarine

A toxic alkaloid which is the active constituent of curare, used as a muscle relaxant.

A drug given by intravenous injection to produce relaxation of voluntary muscles before surgery and in such conditions as tetanus, encephalitis, and poliomyelitis. Toxic side-effects are usually only seen with overdo-sage, when respiratory failure due to paralysis of respiratory muscles may occur.

A voluntary-muscle relaxant given by intravenous injection before surgery under general anaesthesia. The drug is also used to treat conditions such as tetanus, encephalitis and poliomyelitis in which severe muscle spasms occur. Over dosage may result in respiratory failure because the muscles essential for breathing are paralyzed.
