A large nonbloodsucking fly. Cordylobia anthropophaga, widely distributed in tropical Africa. The female fly lays her eggs on ground contaminated with urine or excreta or on clothing tainted with sweat or urine. The maggots are normally parasites of rats, but if they come into contact with man they penetrate the skin, producing boil-like swellings. The maggots can be gently eased out by applying oil to the swellings.
A species of fly belonging to the genus Cordylobia in Africa and the genus Dermatobia in tropical America. Their larvae develop in the skin of wild domesticated animals, and humans are frequently attacked.
A fly native to Africa whose larvae can burrow into the skin, leading to a condition known as myiasis.
