Tympanites

Abnormal distention due to the presence of gas or air in the intestine or the peritoneal cavity.


The expansion of the stomach with gas.


Distension of the abdomen with air or gas: the abdomen is resonant (drum-like) on percussion. Causes include intestinal obstruction, irritable bowel syndrome, and aerophagia.


Severe swelling of the abdomen caused by an accumulation of gas in the intestines or the peritoneal cavity, also known as meteorism.
