Tomatoes Facts

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable in the home garden. They are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors including red, yellow, orange, and pink. Sizes vary from the bite-sized cherry tomatoes to the giant beefsteak varieties. Tomatoes may be round, oblate or pear-shaped. Tomatoes are low in calories and a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants.

Plant Growth Habit An annual erect or prostrate, sparingly branched herb
Growing Climate Prefers plenty of sun, moisture and warmth for high yield and premium quality.
Soil Grows well on most mineral soils but prefers deep, well-drained sandy loams to clayey loams, moderately rich in organic matter.
Plant Size 1–3 meters (3–10 ft) in height
Root Strong tap root with dense lateral and adventitious root system.
Stem Viscid pubescent, green stems covered with odorous, glandular trichomes
Leaf Spirally arranged, pubescent on both surfaces, imparipinnate compound, in outline 15–50 cm long by 10–30 cm wide, on 3–6 cm long petioles.
Leaflets Variable in size, 5–9 per leaf, ovate to elliptic, 5–10 cm long, irregularly toothed and sometimes pinnatifid at base, terminal leaflets larger than the lateral ones, petiolules 0.2–2.0 cm long.
Flower 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) across, yellow, with five pointed lobes on the corolla; they are borne in a cyme of three to 12 together.
Berry Shape & Size Usually subglobose, but often of varying shape, glabrescent, 2–3.5 cm diameter two- to multi-locular, fleshy and juicy.
Berry Color Pale green turning red, orange, orangey-yellow, yellow, pink, purple, on ripening.
Flesh Color Soft, pinkish red
Fruit weight Approximately 4 ounces.
Flavor/aroma Sweet, acidic flavor
Taste Slightly bitter and acidic taste
Seed Flattened ovoid, 3–5 mm × 2–4 mm, straw colored, pubescent, embryo coiled in endosperm.
