  • Radiation source prosthesis

A prosthesis made for a specific patient to aid in the trajectory and targeting of radiation to an anatomic site in order to treat a tumor at that site.

  • Radiation shield

A prosthesis used during radiation treatment that protects adjacent areas of tissue not meant to be radiated from ortho‐voltage during treatment of malignant lesions of the head and neck area. Also known as a radiation positioner.

  • Radiation

In dentistry, usually refers to ionizing radiation. The energy that comes from a source of unstable atoms, which have excess energy, is then passed through tissue, producing charged particles called ions. These unstable ions are radioactive and become stable by release of energy, which can be in the form of electromagnetic radiation, such as X‐rays,…

  • RAD (abbrev)

Radiation absorbed dose, a unit of absorbed dose of ionizing radiation equivalent to an energy of 100 ergs per gram of irradiated material. A unit of measurement of absorbed radiation dose.

  • Rt

The maximum peak‐to‐valley height of the entire measurement trace.

  • Ra

The arithmetic average of the absolute value of all points of the profile, also called central line average height.

  • R value

A two‐dimensional roughness parameter calculated from the experimental profiles after filtering.

  • Quinolones

A class of synthetic, broadspectrum antibacterial agents that exhibit bactericidal action. A drug used to treat Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial infections of the respiratory and urinary tracts and of the gastro-intestinal system. A group of chemically related synthetic antibiotics. Examples include nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin which are effective in treating uncomplicated urinary-tract, respiratory-tract and…

  • Quartz

The second most abundant mineral in the earth’s continental crust. It is an extremely hard material made up of a continuous framework of SiO4. Silicon dioxide, the principal ingredient of sandstone (crystallized silica; rock crystal). When crystal is clear and colorless, it permits the passage of large amounts of ultraviolet rays.

  • Quadrant

One of the four sections into which the dental arches can be divided, as determined by an imaginary midline between the central incisors, dividing each dental arch into two halves. Pertaining to a specific area of the abdominal wall. One of four sectors of the body thought of as being divided by the sagittal plane…
