  • Forearm

That part of the upper limb of the body between the elbow and the wrist. The portion of the arm between the elbow and wrist.

  • Food and Beverages

    Edible or potable substances.

  • Fold

A plication or doubling of various parts of the body. A part of the body which is bent so that it lies on top of another part. Doubling back or infolding (e.g., neural fold, which leads to development of the neural tube in the embryo).

  • Fluorescent Dyes

Dyes that emit light when exposed to light. The wave length of the emitted light is usually longer than that of the incident light. Fluorochromes are substances that cause fluorescence in other substances, i.e., dyes used to mark or label other compounds with fluorescent tags. They are used as markers in biochemistry and immunology.

  • Fluorescence

The property of emitting radiation while being irradiated. The radiation emitted is usually of longer wavelength than that incident or absorbed, e.g., a substance can be irradiated with invisible radiation and emit visible light. X-ray fluorescence is used in diagnosis. The reaction of certain molecules upon absorption of specific amount/wavelength of light; in which those…

  • Flucytosine

A fluorinated cytosine analog that is used as an antifungal agent. An antifungal drug used to treat Candida, cryptococci, and other fungi. It is used with amphotericin B to improve the efficacy of therapy against cryptococcal meningitis.

  • Fluconazole

Triazole antifungal agent that is used to treat oropharyngeal candidiasis and cryptococcal meningitis in AIDS. A drug used to treat fungal infections such as candidiasis. An antifungal drug used to treat yeast infections. Fluconazole (Diflucan, Triflucan) is used to treat oral candidiasis (thrush) and cryptococcal meningitis, opportunistic infections often seen in people with AIDS (acquired…

  • Fibrinogen

Plasma glycoprotein clotted by thrombin, composed of a dimer of three non-identical pairs of polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, gamma) held together by disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen clotting is a sol-gel change involving complex molecular arrangements: whereas fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form polypeptides A and B, the proteolytic action of other enzymes yields different fibrinogen…

  • Fermentation

An enzyme-induced chemical change in organic compounds that takes place in the absence of oxygen. The change usually results in the production of ethanol or lactic acid, and the production of energy. Decomposition of sugars to carbon dioxide and alcohol. A term first used with regard to the foaming that occurs during the manufacture of…

  • Feces

The excrement discharged from the intestines, consisting of bacteria, cells exfoliated from the intestines, secretions, chiefly of the liver, and a small amount of food residue. Excrement discharged from the anus containing undigested food, intestinal secretions, intestinal flora, and desquamated intestinal cells. Material discharged from the bowel in defecation. Formed in the colon, feces consist…
