Mindblown: a blog about philosophy.

  • Kinetic

Pertaining to or producing motion. Relating to movement. Study of motion, including the forces producing and modifying motion.

  • Killer cells

Lymphocyte-like effector cells which mediate antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity. They kill antibody-coated target cells which they bind with their Fc receptors. A type of immune cell that recognises and destroys cells that have specific antigens on their surface, e.g. virus-infected or cancerous cells.

  • Ketosteroids

Steroid derivatives formed by oxidation of a methyl group on the side chain or a methylene group in the ring skeleton to form a ketone. A steroid such as cortisone which contains a ketone groups. Steroids, a group of compounds that share a chemical resemblance to cholesterol, contain ketone groups attached to carbon atoms. When…

  • Ketoconazole

Broad spectrum antifungal agent used for long periods at high doses, especially in immunosuppressed patients. A drug which is effective against a wide range of fungal infections such as cryptococcosis and thrush. An antifungal drug available as a tablet, a shampoo, and a cream. Ketoconazole (Nizoral), taken as a tablet, prevents the growth of fungus…

  • Kb

A measure of the length of DNA fragments, 1 Kb = 1000 base pairs. The largest DNA fragments are up to 50 kilobases long.

  • Itraconazole

An antifungal agent that has been used in the treatment of histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, cryptococcal meningitis, and aspergillosis. An antifungal drug used to treat serious fungal infections, particularly of the lungs. Itraconazole (Sporanox) is used to prevent and treat the fungal infections histoplasmosis and blastomycosis; both are diseases of the lung. A liquid form of the…

  • Isoprenoid

Molecule that might anchor G protein to the cell membrane as it is hydrophobic.

  • Isoenzyme

Different forms of an enzyme, usually occurring in different tissues. The isoenzymes of a particular enzyme catalyze the same reaction but they differ in some of their properties. Enzymes that have the same catalytic activity, but different structures, properties, and/or tissue distribution. A physically distinct form of a given enzyme. Isoenzymes catalyze the same type…

  • Ions

An atom or group of atoms that have a positive or negative electric charge due to a gain (negative charge) or loss (positive charge) of one or more electrons. Atoms with a positive charge are known as cations; those with a negative charge are anions.

  • Ion transport

The movement of ions across energy-transducing cell membranes. Transport can be active or passive. Passive ion transport (facilitated diffusion) derives its energy from the concentration gradient of the ion itself and allows the transport of a single solute in one direction (uniport). Active ion transport is usually coupled to an energy-yielding chemical or photochemical reaction…
