The Top 5 Foods That Improve Mental Health

If you’re an avid reader of this site, you know that we often speak about healthy food in general. However, today, we will be covering the foods that are best for improving your mental health. This shouldn’t be brushed aside. In fact, the state of mental health in our country has been on the decline over the past few decades, and is only getting worse. Now, the good news is that the majority of people suffering from mental health are dealing with minor issues that can be overcome with the help of a trained professional, or even by educating yourself on self-help websites (such as Psychology Today or E-counseling). Additionally and equally as important is another easy step you can take if you fall into this ‘majority’ category: start eating foods that are known to improve your mental health. That said, here are the top five things to put in your mouth if you’re dealing with a mental illness.

    Chia Seeds

It is well documented that a low level of Omega 3 fatty acids can lead to depression and anxiety. Fortunately, you can counter that with chia seeds, which are loaded with Omega 3’s. They also have Omega 6, potassium, calcium and magnesium – all elements to help improve your mental health.

    Salmon

Fish is generally considered healthy as it’s a protein. However, salmon takes the cake here. Like chia seeds, there is an abundance of Omega 3 in salmon. Salmon also has the all-important Vitamin D and, also like chia seeds, potassium. In addition to this, salmon provides the body with tryptophan. Say what? Tryptophan – an amino acid, which converts naturally to serotonin, which is a very significant mood regulator in the brain.

    Spinach

There’s a reason why Popeye was so strong. And no, it wasn’t all physical strength. Popeye was mentally tough as well. The spinach certainly played an important role in that. In addition to magnesium, calcium and potassium, spinach is an excellent source of iron. In general green vegetables are considered to be very helpful to improving your mental state, but spinach really is on the top of the list here.

    Eggs

If you’re a breakfast person, you’re probably very happy to see eggs on the list. Who doesn’t love a good omelet in the morning? Well lucky you, because eggs are fantastic for your state of mind. Like salmon, there is plenty of Vitamin D in them. Did we forget to mention that eggs are also a great source of Vitamin B12? This shouldn’t be overlooked as plenty of people have a Vitamin B12 deficiency.

    Berries

This is our favorite on this list because, well, like eggs (and even more than eggs), who doesn’t love berries? And it’s not just limited to a certain type of berries. Pretty much any berries work magic on your mental health. This includes, but is not limited to, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Heck, are you a blackberry fan? Indulge!

The above five foods are among the best to help improve your mental health. Other notable mentions are yogurt and broccoli. In addition to eating the above foods, you should really try to cut out sugar and carbs…at least as much as possible. Follow this formula and you will see results.
