The plant is native to southern China, in the provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Schezwan and Fukien, Hainan, Yunnan and is also known as the lychee’s little brother. Flower are pale-yellow, 5- to 6-petalled, hairy-stalked flowers, larger than those of the lychee, are borne in upright terminal panicles, male and female mingled.
Fruit hangs in drooping clusters that are circular and about 1.25–3 cm in diameter and are usually yellowish brown or sometimes grayish yellow. The peel is tan, thin, and leathery with tiny hairs. The flesh is translucent, and the seed is large and black with a circular white spot at the base. This gives the illusion of an eye.
