    Natural Foods That Heal Sciatica

Did you know that there is relief from your sciatica in the foods that you eat? Natural foods can help alleviate the pain that you experience from sciatica and help you live your life to the fullest. Local Surrey chiropractor, Dr. Travis Meier, has some nutritional recommendations to get you on the path to better health.

    Foods Rich in Vitamin B

To begin with, vitamin B has a big role in how your body, including your nervous system, functions throughout the day. Any type of deficiency can interfere with how well your nerves transmit to one another and contribute to your sciatica.

Foods rich in vitamin B include:

    • Fish
    • Bananas
    • Eggs
    • Broccoli
    • Asparagus
    • Cauliflower
    • Legumes

    Foods Rich in Magnesium

Magnesium has a wonderful benefit of naturally reducing your risk for muscle spasms, which can also be causing your sciatica.

    Magnesium-rich foods include:

    • Fish
    • Dairy products
    • Apples
    • Spinach
    • Tofu
    • Almonds
    • Dark Chocolate

    Foods Rich in Potassium

Potassium actually has an important role in your central nervous systems. Instead of dealing physically with the muscles, potassium helps regulate the electrical activity throughout your body, which is partly the reason why it is also so good for your heart.

    Potassium-rich foods include:

    • Bananas
    • Apricots
    • Dark leafy greens
    • Potatoes
    • Mushrooms
    • Peas
    • Cucumbers
    • Broccoli
    • Sweet potatoes

Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have been repeatedly shown to have wonderful benefits for your body, which also includes helping damaged nerves recover and heal. If your sciatic nerve has been damaged or is otherwise experiencing discomfort, eating Omega-3-rich foods can help your body repair itself.

    Omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods include:

    • Salmon
    • Halibut
    • Trout
    • Flaxseeds
    • Walnuts
    • Spinach
    • Brussels sprouts
    • Chia seeds

    Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Outside of vitamins and minerals, there are also some foods that will help you with your sciatica, including any inflammation you might be experiencing:

Good foods to help with inflammation include:

    • Dark leafy greens
    • Spices, including cinnamon and turmeric
    • Green Tea
    • Fermented vegetables, like kimchi
    • Berries
    • Nuts
    • Broccoli
    • Tomatoes

    Foods for Muscle Repair

There are also foods that can help heal your sciatica if your sciatica is being caused by muscle compression. If that is the case, this type of food can help nourish your muscles to prevent future and further injury while repairing the damage that is currently present. Protein is an excellent muscle builder as well, which is what you will find in this type of food, but remember to eat healthy proteins, not anything that is too high in fat.

    Muscle-repair foods include:

    • Nuts
    • Seeds
    • Tart cherries
    • Eggs
    • Salmon

    Mix it Up

While all of the foods that we have talked about can help ease sciatica from a variety of causes, you cannot just eat one type of food. In order to have the best results from this list of foods, you will need to mix up what you are eating, ensuring that you are keeping a balanced and vitamin-rich diet. Too much of one type of food will result in too little of another and all vitamins play a vital role to the overall health of your body.

What you have most likely noticed from the lists of foods is that they are all healthy and unprocessed foods. Each of these foods can contribute to your overall health as well as helping to alleviate pain from your sciatica and perhaps even prevent it from recurring in the future. Remember that when your body feels good, you will feel good as well, enabling you to do more.

You don’t have to live with sciatica. Use these foods to find relief today.
