    Fuji apple is an apple hybrid created by growers at Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Aomori, Japan in late 1930s and was brought to the market in 1962. It is a cross between two apple varieties: old Virginia Ralls Genet and Red Delicious apples. The name “fuji” is derived from the name of the town “Fujisaki” where it was developed.

    Fuji is an alluring apple variety characterized by pink speckled flush over yellow to green background. The color ranges from light pink to crimson pink. It is juicy, crisp with dull white flesh. It possesses a refreshing and sweet flavor. Being a late ripening apple variety, Fuji apples are available during November/December (in northern hemisphere) and May/June (in southern hemisphere). Generally, Fuji apples are round, large to very large about 75 mm in diameter. It consists of 9 to 11% sugars by weight and has dense, sweeter, crisper flesh than other apple cultivars. These apples have long shelf life than others even without being refrigerated. When refrigerated, Fuji apples could remain fresh for up to a year.

    In 2016 and 2017, about 43 million tons of Fuji apples were grown. When introduced to U.S. in 1980s, Fuji apples got popularity with American consumers. It is grown in states such as New York, Michigan, Washington and California. About 135000 tons of Fuji apples are grown in Washington state each year.

    Health Benefits of Fuji Apples

    Apples are regarded as economical foods that are very nutritious. The variety Fuji apple is large as well as pale red in color. It offers various nutrients which are essential to maintain health such as vitamin C.

    Biting and chewing this apple vitalizes the production of saliva in mouth. It ensures low presence of bacteria in the mouth and also reduces the chances of tooth decay..

    • Excess intake of apples may result in weight gain.
    • Being highly acidic, apple juice may damage tooth enamel.
